Preventive Care » Bad Breath

At LDP we realise that bad breath is a common problem and causes embarrassment for those affected.

As part of your overall treatment plan, we can help to solve this problem by identifying the cause and recommending solutions to help you achieve fresh breath confidence.

Here are some of the causes of bad breath:
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Infection and abscesses
  • Smoking
  • Poor diet
  • Foods, such as garlic and onions
  • Stomach conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Dry mouth conditions
However, most persistent bad breath is usually caused by the sulphurous gases released by the plaque bacteria that coat your teeth, gums and the back of your tongue.

our preventive advice

» have regular dental check-ups

Gum disease and dental decay can be identified by your dentist, and are simple to treat if caught early

» develop a good oral hygiene routine

Plaque bacteria and bits of food that get caught between the teeth will cause an unpleasant smell, so good dental hygiene including correct and regular brushing is very important to keep your breath fresh.

» don’t forget to brush your tongue as well

Plaque bacteria also live on the tongue. You can use your toothbrush to clean your tongue or buy a special tongue cleaner at our reception

» floss your teeth

Brushing alone only cleans up to about 60 percent of the surface of your teeth. There are other products you can buy to clean between your teeth called interdental brushes. Ask our receptionist for further information.

» use a mouthwash recommended by your dentist

Some contain antibacterial agents that kill the bacteria that make your breath smell unpleasant.

»  eat a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables
and drink plenty of water

» cut down on how often you have sugary food and drinks

Sugary foods and drink produce an acidic environment in your mouth for at least 40 minutes after eating, attacking the enamel surfaces of your teeth

» keep a food diary

If you do have bad breath, try keeping a diary of all the foods you eat and list any medicines you are taking. Take this diary to your dentist who may be able to suggest ways to solve the problem.

»  chew sugar-free gum

It stimulates saliva and stops your mouth drying out. A dry mouth can lead to bad breath.
