» what is botox?
Botox™ is made from botulinum toxin, a purified product made from the Botulinum bacterium. Botulinum toxin has been used extensively in medicine since its’ development in the 1980s. It has been safely and effectively used for treatment of strabismus (cross-eye), blepharospasm (lid spasm), hemifacial spasm, hyperhidrosis of the axillae (excessive sweating in the armpit) and cerebral palsy.
» how does botox work?
Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often results in the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and/or crow's feet. Injecting botox into the affected area temporarily relaxes the underlying muscles responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance. The wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether.
» when and how long does botulinum toxin work?
The initial effects of treatment become visible within 48 to 72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about I to 2 weeks. Your facial expression will become more relaxed but by no means mask-like. The overall result is very natural. The effect of treatment generally lasts for 4 to 6 months. Re-treatment is then required.
Sites commonly treated with botulinum toxin include:
- Frown lines (glabellar lines)
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
However, the following areas can also be treated:
- nose (Bunny lines)
- chin (mentalis muscle)
- neck (platysma bands)
- oral commissures (corners of mouth).
hyperhydrosis
Botulinum toxin can also be used very effectively to treat hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) in the underarm region and forehead.
